I was approached by Welbeck to design the 2 books based around Studio Ghibli. Giblioteque - The complete and essential guide to the magical movies of Studio Ghibli was adapted from the acclaimed podcast, Ghibliotheque offers a well-balanced and highly informed critique of some of the greatest animated movies of all time, including Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro and Princess Mononoke. From Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind to Earwig and the Witch, authors Michael Leader and Jake Cunningham review every Studio Ghibli feature film, providing insightful background information on how the films were made, and considered film-fan reactions to the works themselves. The book was a delight to work on, with the beautiful illustrations, stills and posters, and portraits of the creative team and the Studio itself. This is a comprehensive, engaging guide to the wonderfully complex, mysterious and entertaining worlds of the legendary, Oscar-winning animation company.
The Ghibliotheque Anime Movie Guide was the second book I was asked to design in a similar theme to the first book. This book explores the magical world of anime through 30 classic films by the authors of Ghibliotheque. From box office hits such as Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Your Name to a host of deeper cuts, hidden gems and future classics, this revealing guide lifts the lid on Japanese animated cinema. Jake Cunningham and Michael Leader, hosts of the acclaimed Ghibliotheque podcast, review 30 of the best anime movies ever created, explaining why each is a must-see and detailing the intriguing stories behind their creation. This book is an insight into a unique art form, packed with film stills, movie posters and director portraits, it offers an enchanting, enlightening and meticulously researched guide for newcomers and die-hard fans alike.
